Call for Editorial and Communications Intern

The Green European Foundation (GEF) is looking for an intern to support the publication and communication activities of the Green European Journal.  The successful candidate will join our team in Brussels as soon as possible. 

About the Journal

The Green European Journal is Europe’s political ecology magazine. Its editorial project is guided by the principles of an open, sustainable, social and feminist Europe. In print and online, it publishes articles which track political currents and ideas offering fresh perspectives and analysis. Its print editions come out twice a year, while articles and interviews are published online every week. Editorially independent, it has published in 28 languages since its foundation in 2012 and collaborates with partners across Europe to connect new audiences and open up spaces for debate. Based at the Green European Foundation, the spirit of the magazine is that of a broad conversation about political ecology and what it means for our society, today and for the years to come.

The Green European Foundation (GEF) is a European level political foundation funded by the European Parliament. GEF cooperates in full autonomy with European Green actors such as the European Green Party and the Green Group in the European Parliament in pursuit of its mission to encourage European citizens to participate in European political discussions. About the role of the Intern 

We are currently looking for an intern to support the publication and communication activities of the Green European Journal. The successful candidate will be willing to learn about the different processes behind the running of the journal and assist various tasks in support of the team. 

Main tasks

  • Publishing articles and translations on the journal website  
  • Liaising with contributors, translators and service providers  
  • Assisting with practical and administrative tasks (e.g. archiving, invoice management)  
  • Assisting the distribution of print editions (e.g. administration, responding to queries, posting, and liaison with postal service)  
  • Supporting the journal’s communications and outreach efforts  
  • Carrying out monthly reporting 
  • Putting together visuals for website and social media 
  • Occasional proofreading  

What we are looking for

  • Enthusiastic candidates with proficient written and oral command of English. Native proficiency of English is an asset 
  • Proficiency in the use of digital media and social networks  
  • Demonstrated interest in graphic design. Entry-level skills in Adobe Illustrator and Premiere are an asset 
  • Good organisational and administrative skills and openness towards a variety of tasks  
  • An interest in and affinity with green issues and European politics  
  • Interpersonal skills and eagerness to work in a political and intercultural environment
  • Available full-time for 6 months as of September 2024 in Brussels with the possibility of renewal for another 6 months  

What we offer

A paid internship, under a Belgian “convention d’immersion professionelle” in our Brussels office:    

  • 1365 EUR/month net   
  • Food vouchers amounting to 7EUR/worked day

  • A training budget of 500 EUR/6 months

What you will learn

  • You will gain an understanding of the publication cycle and workflow of a magazine, both in print and online 
  • You will gain experience in handling administrative responsibilities and invoice management 
  • You will enhance interpersonal skills to support community building at events and liaise with service providers 
  • You will develop skills in graphic design and multimedia content creation 
  • You will strengthen your writing skills and get familiar with the needs of writing for different channels (website, social media, newsletters)

Starting date: First week of September 2024.
